THOUSANDS of noisy fans greeted Manchester band The Stone Roses back home for the triumphant first night of four huge shows at the Etihad Stadium.

It wasn't quite full but 60,000 people bought tickets for the opening gig, filling the pitch and most of the stands to watch the Roses work their way through back catalogue favourites and one new song at City's ground.

The sea of bucket hats stayed dry as the rain largely held off, and coloured flairs drifted across the crowd as the group's favourite set starter I Wanna Be Adored kicked in.

Following some last minute intimate shows in Halifax and Carlisle last week, the band sounded sparky and sharp. Backdropped by huge screens splashed with yellow and blue lemons, they smashed through classics Elephant Stone and Sally Cinnamon. …
