One Year Later despite Gay Marriage Victory, Long Road toward Acceptance

The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in favor of same-sex marriage gave 28-year-old Cherrin Myhart hope.

"It means one day, I will be able to marry a person I love and I won't have to live in fear," she said Sunday during the PrideFest parade. Dressed in a bright yellow dress and high heels, she reflected on the June 2015 decision in Obergefell vs. Hodges. The landmark case resulted in a long-sought victory for the LGBTQ community nationwide when the court ruled 5-4 that gay couples have the right to marry.

Now, more than half of Americans - 55 percent - say they favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally, and 37 percent remain opposed, according to a Pew Research Center March poll. Younger people, age 30 and under, are the most supportive at around 73 percent, followed by those age 30 to 49 at 61 percent.

Though the decision gives her the prospect of marriage, Ms. Myhart said there's still a long way to go in achieving LGBTQ acceptance in society.

She works for a company that takes care of intellectually and development challenged individuals, and said she feels discrimination every day. "But I just give [those people] kindness, I show them love and respect. They are the ones who need help since they don't understand."

Ms. Myhart said she tries to educate people, but it doesn't always help. She never loses faith though: "I know God is on my side."

Same-sex marriage became legal in Pennsylvania on May 20, 2014, making the state the 19th to allow gays to marry. It was a life-changing decision for many, but problems still exist.

"I can marry in Pennsylvania, but I can still lose my job," said Catherine Sirocco, one of the Pittsburgh Pride participants. A mother of two, she went to Maryland to marry her partner after same-sex marriage was legally recognized there in 2013. …
