Re "Delta Air Lines Scaling Back Late Summer Paris Flights" (June 14):

On Sunday evening, my wife and I returned to Pittsburgh from a vacation, taking the direct Paris-to-Pittsburgh Delta flight operated by Air France. That was the fourth non-stop Pittsburgh-Paris flight we have taken since this Delta service was instituted.

There is no weakening demand for European travel and the excellent Delta service. The weakening demand for this flight is caused by the destination and passport control on both ends.

First, Pittsburgh has a large number of German companies, which should be serviced by direct flights to Munich or Frankfurt. Second, passport control at the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport is chaos. Huge lines are serviced by too few passport officials who are generally disinterested. …
