Plum's Baseball Coach, Team among ?Homeless'

The Plum High School baseball team was getting ready for a PIAA championship the past few days, but the Mustangs couldn't use their home field for practice. And coach Carl Vollmer couldn't get to his home.

All because of the U.S. Open.

Plum High School is closed this week and being used as a drop-off point for U.S. Open shuttle service. So Plum's team couldn't get to its locker room or use its field for practice as the Mustangs prepared for the PIAA Class AAAA championship today at Penn State. Instead, Plum practiced at the Boyce campus of Community College of Allegheny County.

On top of that, Vollmer joked that he is "homeless." He rented out his home for the week to Derek Bard, an amateur who will play in the U.S. Open.

"We don't have any family in the area, so my wife and two young boys and myself are all staying at a hotel," Vollmer said, with a laugh. …
