Responding to Nick Collen's June 12 letter, "Pension Reform Is an Urgent Problem," I'd like to offer a few observations. I am a retired teacher.

First of all, the teacher pension fund was instituted prior to the Great Depression and it survived that financial disaster intact.

Second, under Gov. Tom Ridge, the pension system payments for legislators were increased 50 percent, and to give themselves some cover, they gave teachers a 25 percent increase for which they didn't ask. A good number of legislators lost their next elections because of this.
