Disney Xd Debuts 'Star Wars' Comedy

Article excerpt

The notion of a "Star Wars" comedy might be anathema to some fans of that galaxy far, far away, but Disney XD's "Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures" (10 a.m. Monday) offers the type of humor found in "The Lego Movie" plopped into the "Star Wars" universe. It plays like a cleaner version of a "Robot Chicken" "Star Wars" episode.

When Darth Vader tries to sell the Emperor on building a second Death Star, the Emperor replies, "I'm all for ruling the galaxy, that's my thing, but you remember what happened to the first Death Star?"

The Emperor suggests Vader should have a Plan B and then slyly adds, "Dooku always had a Plan B."

Set between the events of "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," the show follows the three Freemaker siblings, who make a living salvaging scrap that's reminiscent of Rey in "The Force Awakens."

Zander (Eugene Byrd) and Kordi (Vanessa Lengies, "Glee") take the lead and often get flummoxed by 12-year-old little brother Rowan (Nicola Cantu), a seemingly ADHD-addled, Force-sensitive kid.

In the pilot, the family gets caught up in an adventure with family battle droid/servant Roger (Matthew Wood) that leads Rowan to discover a piece of the Kyber Saber, an ancient Jedi artifact.

Written by Bill Motz and Bob Roth ("Penguins of Madagascar"), "Freemaker Adventures" offers plenty of Easter eggs for "Star Wars" fans but also exists in its own little corner of the universe. For younger children, it also has the benefit of being less scary than some past animated "Star Wars" series for TV.

'Nashville' revived

Late last week cable's CMT ordered a 22-episode fifth season of "Nashville" after ABC canceled the prime-time soap last month. Episodes will be available the day after their CMT premiere on Hulu.

Comcast maintenance

Comcast will do network maintenance June 28 in traditional Comcast systems and on June 30 in former Adelphia systems that will impact any DVR recordings set to take place after those dates on the following channels: WQED, FOX Life, Bandamax, De Pelicula Clasico and TV Venezuela. …
