Westar Issues First 'Green Bonds'

Westar Energy Inc. issued its first green bonds this week to support renewable energy projects in Kansas.

The company issued $350 million in bonds, which will be used to invest in wind energy projects, primarily the construction of Western Plains Wind Farm. The company announced in April that it would build the 280-megawatt wind farm in Ford County, Kan., to be operational by early 2017.

"These look like regular bonds, except for they are used for investment in environmentally friendly projects," said spokeswoman Gina Penzig. "If an individual investor was interested in having these bonds in his or her portfolio, the best thing would be to share that with a financial advisor."

As investors have become more interested in funding projects that contribute positively to the environment, the market for green bonds has exploded, prompting The Economist to report in 2014, "Occasionally a market appears out of nowhere. …
