Democrats named Jim Gartner the newest member of the Kansas Legislature Monday night, selecting him to replace Rep. Annie Tietze, who quietly resigned earlier this month.

Precinct committee members in the 53rd District unanimously elected Gartner, who currently serves as president of the USD 437 Auburn-Washburn school board.

Gartner will undergo a trial by fire of sorts as he reports to the Statehouse on Thursday for a rare special session to address a school finance ruling by the state Supreme Court.

"My values and priorities are in line with those of the voters in the district," Gartner said. "I look forward to moving past the failures of the Brownback Administration and getting Kansas on the right track again."

Gartner will seek re-election in November. …
