Franklin Lakes Trustees Move to Limit Recordings at Meetings

FRANKLIN LAKES -- The Board of Education has approved a revised policy prohibiting the recording of private conversations among the public and among board members and the board attorney during school board meetings.

However, the board vice president acknowledged at last Tuesday's meeting that the restriction is more of a guideline than an enforceable rule.

The board voted 8-1 to approve the policy on second reading, with trustee Susan McGowan voting against it.

The revised policy states that when the board "determines that a person's right to privacy may be violated by continued recording," the board "shall request that recording be suspended temporarily."

Vice President Kathie Schwartz said the language in the policy was run past Board Attorney Stephen Fogarty and that it was "consistent" with state law and similar policies. …
