Locals Take Part in National Go Skateboarding Day at Oakland- Billard Park

Though temperatures topped 97 degrees Tuesday evening, more than 30 skateboarders and about 100 spectators gathered at Mousetrap Skate Park to take part in National Go Skateboarding Day.

"Considering the heat, people have really come out," said Gloria Cortez-Leonard, administrator with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation.

The event included a competition with four age divisions and participants ranging from 8 to 28 years old. Advanced local skaters judged the competition, Cortez said.

"It's a great opportunity for people to come out and skate and get recognized at all levels," said Rebecca Wedeking, who was watching her 9-year-old son.

The money raised through the competition's registration fee will go toward park improvements, Cortez said.

Nine-year-old Anthony Hurla won his age division.

"It feels awesome," Hurla said as he carried his trophy. Hurla said he has been skateboarding for about two years.

The skate park is part of Oakland-Billard Park in the Oakland community. …
