Matthew Wellington describes a frightening future of antibiotic-resistant bacteria killing even more people than cancer now does ("Superbug Is a Wake-up Call," June 17). Meat producers who routinely use antibiotics on farm animals that aren't sick so that they will grow faster or survive overcrowded, unsanitary conditions are prioritizing their profits over our health and rendering lifesaving medicines useless.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has not restricted this dangerous practice in part because many of its staff members come from the meat industry. The Food and Drug Administration has also not yet banned this dangerous practice in part because many of its staff members come from the pharmaceutical industry, which profits from the sale of vast quantities of antibiotics. …
