LYNDHURST -- The William D. McDowell Observatory, closed to the public since early this year, has reopened for free viewing nights year-round on Wednesday evenings, the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority said on Thursday.

The sports authority shut the observatory down in January so that a leak in the hydraulic system that controls its 6-meter retractable dome could be repaired, and public viewings were suspended at that time. The observatory is operated by Bergen Community College and located in DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst, where the sports authority has its headquarters.

The observatory's research-grade telescope has a 20-inch mirror housed beneath its dome, enabling viewers to see stars, planets and constellations millions of light-years away. Throughout the summer, the planets Mars and Saturn; Arcturus, a bright star; and Almach, a star system, are visible in the night sky, according to the sports authority. …
