Man Had Handgun, Say Cops Who Tackled Him

PATERSON -- Two police officers captured a 22-year-old city man who tried to escape early Thursday when they noticed he was carrying a gun in the pocket of his sweatshirt during a 4th Ward traffic stop, authorities said.

After a struggle, the officers -- Joehan Suarez and Salvatore Marotta -- found the gun, a 9mm Sig Sauer, and learned it was loaded with four bullets, including one in the chamber ready to be fired, police said.

The incident unfolded at about 5:10 a.m. on 12th Avenue between Carroll Street and Rosa Parks Boulevard, said Police Director Jerry Speziale.

During the traffic stop, the officers saw a man in the backseat try to kick into hiding an open bottle of alcohol, Speziale said.

The officers asked him to get out of the car and when he opened the door, Suarez spotted the butt end of a handgun in his pocket, the director said. …
