Will Our Leaders Take Action to Eliminate Lead in Communities?

Lead permanently damages the developing brains of infants and toddlers. Yet the American Academy of Pediatrics tells us "Most existing lead standards fail to protect children. They provide only an illusion of safety" ("Lead: There Is No Safe Level for Kids," June 21).

Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and Pennsylvania have experienced this "illusion of safety."

Pennsylvania is the second-worst state for lead poisoning of young children (Centers for Disease Control, 2014 State Surveillance reports). Every year infants and toddlers experience brain damage from the impact of this all-too-common neurotoxin, lead.

Year after year, young children start first grade in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and across rural and urban communities in Pennsylvania with less capacity to learn. …
