Capital's Slater Wins State Gatorade Boys Track Honor

Capital High School pole vaulter Tristan Slater was named the 2015-16 Gatorade West Virginia Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year Thursday. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.

The 5-foot-11, 162-pound senior won the pole vault at the Class AAA state meet for a third straight year last month. A member of the Canadian National Team and the 2014 Canadian Junior national champion, Slater cleared 17 feet, 1 inch this past season, which ranked as the nation's No. 8 height in 2016 among prep competitors at the time of his selection.

Slater has maintained a 3.73 GPA in the classroom. A Life Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, he has volunteered locally as a youth soccer and track coach. …
