Supporter Turns Rival: Russell Opponent Claims to Be More Conservative Candidate

OKLAHOMA CITY - Frank Volpe is a Republican congressional candidate with just a few thousand dollars, running against an incumbent with about $100,000 on hand. But Volpe is optimistic.

He is vying to unseat U.S. Rep. Steve Russell, who represents the Oklahoma City metro area. They will appear on the June 28 primary ballot.

Volpe has cast himself as a more conservative alternative to Russell, who has voted for the omnibus spending bill and the Puerto Rico debt restructuring deal. Russell also has spoken in favor of accepting Syrian refugees.

Although Russell voted to require refugees to undergo additional security screening, he said on the House floor last year that "the Statue of Liberty cannot have a stiff arm."

Volpe, however, criticized the statement and said Russell's fellow Republicans bullied him into voting for the bill after his debate. …
