New Gold Standard for All Uniforms Road Jerseys Will Be Different Next Season

The Penguins are making their uniform switch to black and "Pittsburgh gold" permanent, the team announced today. The switch becomes official starting at the NHL draft this weekend.

From the 2002-03 season through 2015-16, the Penguins used "Vegas gold" as their main uniform color. They wore Pittsburgh gold alternate uniforms for the past two seasons, including all home games in the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs, which culminated in the Penguins' fourth championship.

"It's going back to an old look, a look very familiar to the fans that conjures up a lot of great memories," said Chris Creamer of SportsLogos.net, a popular website that examines teams' jerseys and logos. "What can be better than thinking of Mario Lemieux and Kevin Stevens, Rick Tocchet, all those great players back in the day?"

Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan said the team's players grew up seeing photos of Penguins greats wearing the Pittsburgh gold uniforms.

"It's definitely a tie to the past," McMillan said.

The team also will wear new road jerseys featuring Pittsburgh gold, which Penguins officials said will be available for purchase later this summer.

Creamer said the fan feedback to the uniform change has been "overwhelmingly positive, which is usually not the case when it comes to a new uniform."

The color scheme, similar to the color worn by the Steelers and Pirates, is similar to the design the Penguins wore in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Penguins' dominant color was blue for the franchise's first 23 years before it was replaced with a black-and-gold color scheme.

"At that point, I think Pittsburgh became the only city where all three teams wore the same colors," McMillan said while on his way to Buffalo, N.Y., for the NHL draft. "That's pretty unique. People are proud of that. …
