Police said an East Pittsburgh woman killed her mother with a kitchen knife during a fight, then, with help from her boyfriend, placed the corpse in a garbage bag and left it in a second-floor apartment for a week.

Catherine Grier, 19, was charged Friday with homicide, tampering with evidence, conspiracy and abuse of a corpse in the death of her mother, Brenda Johnson, 58. Ms. Grier's boyfriend, Keith Blackman, 23, was charged with tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and conspiracy.

Ms. Grier told Allegheny County detectives that on June 15 she came home to 538 Bessemer Street in East Pittsburgh, where she was staying with Ms. Johnson and Blackman. She said her mother was drunk and hurling insults.

The two argued and Ms. Grier said she left the house. But she told investigators that her mother was still awake when she returned about 2 a.m. June 16. The two began arguing in the kitchen, and Ms. Grier told investigators her mother punched her. …
