Regarding "The Iran Deal Is Failing" (June 21 Perspectives) by U.S. Rep. Keith Rothfus, R-Sewickley, in whose congressional district I live:

Iran has as much reason to distrust the United States as vice versa. Not since 1856 has Iran started a war. For two millennia, Iran's lands have been subject to invasions. In recent centuries, Great Britain and Russia played tug of war with Iran. In the mid- 20th century, the United States got involved as oil became the world's prize commodity. The CIA helped to oust Iran's Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and oversaw the installation of Shah Reza Pahlavi, an autocrat.

Pahlavi's oppressive rule provoked the 1979 revolution, setting a stage for ongoing tensions. Israel, having been set up by the West in 1948, became a poker for flames of hostility. …
