MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

BRADENTON -- A temporary assignment became more than that Tuesday for Manatee County School Board member John Colon, who is retaining his seat this fall because no one challenged him in his bid for election.

Colon, of University Park, was appointed to the School Board by Gov. Rick Scott in September to fill a vacancy after Mary Cantrell died in June 2015. Cantrell was elected to the District 5 seat in November 2014, and Colon will serve the remainder of her four-year term.

"I look forward to being able to continue to work together with the board members. Consensus is a good thing," Colon said.

A priority in coming months is getting voter approval to extend the half-cent sales tax, Colon said. The money would help build another high school in the Parrish area as well as alleviate overcrowding at Lakewood Ranch and Braden River high schools. Older schools in the central corridor need extensive repairs.

"I want our staff and students to work in a safe, secure and pleasant environment," he said. …
