Summer Camp Helps Kids Hone Reading Skills

PATERSON -- A city-based non-profit is launching a camp that will include a Summer Book Buddies program designed to help Paterson youngsters keep their reading skills sharp while school is out.

The group -- named New City Kids: Paterson -- is still taking applicants for the four-week, half-day camp, which starts next Tuesday.

The Book Buddies will run 35-minute reading sessions three days a week, pairing first- and second-graders with middle school students. The reading sessions are to be overseen by paid interns, who will provide mentoring, according to New City Kids.

"We want to ensure that children are reading through the summer. We want to be proactive about helping develop reading comprehension and decoding skills," said Meka Ward, the after-school center director for New City Kids. "Children don't often hear themselves read out loud. …
