Wyckoff Bans Sale of Pets from Puppy Mills

Wyckoff -- The Township Committee has banned the sale in local pet shops of dogs and cats bred in so-called mills.

Animals from shelters and rescue organizations are exempt from the ban, according to an ordinance adopted unanimously last week. Shelter or rescue animals must not be younger than eight weeks old when sold or adopted.

During a public hearing on the ordinance, Robike Noll-Faries, a volunteer at Animal Aid USA, thanked the governing body for being "one of the first five" in Bergen County to enact such a law.

"This is a good step towards putting an end to puppy mills," Noll- Faries said.

The measure is meant to "help prevent inhumane conditions" and "promote community awareness of animal welfare," according to the language of the ordinance. …
