HACKENSACK -- The state Department of Transportation is working to replace the Route 4 bridge over the Hackensack River that connects the city to Teaneck, starting in 2020.

The span was built in 1931 and has been in need of increasingly more maintenance, according to a fact sheet handed out at an informal public information meeting about the project on Tuesday at The Shops at Riverside Mall.

Preliminary engineering is expected to start in January, and the final design work is to begin in the fall of 2018.

Based on the availability of money, construction will commence two years after that.

The new bridge will be wider than the current span, while staying in the existing right-of-way.

The bridge has three lanes in each direction that will each be widened to 12 feet from 11 feet. …
