As a parent of a child with a disability in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, I am optimistic for the first time in seven years about the direction of our schools. Citizens of this city exercised their right to elect a school board of experienced educators and progressive leaders who have proudly joined rallies and protests to stand up for racial, economic and disability justice in our city and state.

Our locally elected board has proved it will work with marginalized community members to co-construct solutions for PPS. Board members have taken needed action to protect vulnerable populations of students with the Transgender Policy, changes to the Student Code of Conduct to reduce the use of suspensions for minor misconduct and a Community Schools Policy to ensure necessary supports and services for all students for every student to succeed. …
