1863 The pivotal, three-day Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War, resulting in a Union victory, began in Pennsylvania.

1900 Grant Boulevard (Bigelow Boulevard), a "rapid transit" road to the east, conceived in 1891 by E.M. Bigelow and cut out of the side of Bedford Hill, was opened to traffic after three years of work.

2015 After more than a half-century of hostility, the United States and Cuba declared they would reopen embassies in each other's capitals, marking a historic full restoration of diplomatic relations between the Cold War foes.
