Founding Members of Kansas Share Stories at NOTO Arts District Benefit

Topeka Mayor Larry Wolgast remembers Kerry Livgren, founding member of the band Kansas, not from the band's earlier days playing gigs in the capital city but rather from the world history class Wolgast taught at Topeka West High School in the late 1960s.

"I hope some of that knowledge inspired the music," Wolgast said jokingly Friday evening at the NOTO Arts Center.

If history class didn't inspire the band's progressive rock, Topeka did, Livgren said.

"We were Topeka and Topeka was us," he said.

Robby Steinhardt, another founding band member, agreed. Though Steinhardt originally is from Lawrence, he said he considers himself a local because of the time he spent in Topeka whipping the band "into shape."

"There was an inspiration here that I guess nobody really knew," he said. …
