Zika Virus, Planned Parenthood * The Senate on June 28 failed, 52- 48, to reach 60 votes needed to end Democratic blockage of a fiscal 2017 appropriations bill for veterans, military construction, transportation, housing and other programs. The bill includes $1.1 billion for combating the Zika virus. Democrats objected to the bill's ban on Planned Parenthood funding of Zika-related reproductive care. When contracted by pregnant women, the virus can cause microcephaly, a birth defect in which the baby's head is smaller than expected. A yes vote was to advance HR 2577
