Norfolk Southern railroad tracks should be back to full operation today on Pittsburgh's South Side after crews finished a massive cleanup of dirt and rocks Friday.

The railroad reopened one set of tracks Friday and expected to finish with the cleanup so the second set could be back in service Friday evening, spokesman Rudy Husband said. Contractors for Norfolk Southern hauled hundreds of truckloads of dirt and rocks away from the railroad tracks and West Carson Street.

West Carson was closed and the railroad had one set of tracks opened for limited service after a rock slide June 28 on the hill above the tracks across from Highmark Stadium at Station Square.

Contractors used dynamite to bring down some of the loose rock but crews were more successful using excavators, air bags and cables. …
