County employees help assemble care packages

Sarasota County employees have partnered with the Sarasota chapter of the Military Officers Association of America to collect items for care packages that are shipped to the men and women serving overseas.

Retired Army Capt. Steve Thomas, a materials manager for Sarasota County, said care packages helped him while serving in Desert Storm. As a member of the national MOAA organization, Thomas said he saw this as an opportunity to help make a difference.

"This was a chance to give back," Thomas said, "The care packages provide our troops with some of the comforts of home, and remind them they're not alone."

So far, over 100 boxes have been shipped, and county staff is hard at work collecting items for nearly 100 more boxes. …
