Unlike Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin didn't seek out a fight against a welterweight from England for the next defense of his middleweight titles.

Nevertheless, Golovkin will attempt to do essentially the same thing he criticized Alvarez for doing when the Mexican superstar knocked Amir Khan unconscious May 7 in Las Vegas. Promoters announced Friday that the Kazakh knockout artist will defend his IBF, WBA and WBC middleweight championships against unbeaten IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook on Sept. 10 at O2 Arena in London.

England's Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) became a surprising option for Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) on Wednesday. That's when British promoter Eddie Hearn, whose Matchroom Sport represents Brook and English middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr. (23-1, 18 KOs), informed Golovkin's handlers that he couldn't get Eubank to agree to terms for a Sept. 10 fight against Golovkin.

Friday's announcement drew intense criticism on social media, but Golovkin took an unconventional route toward a big payday only because Alvarez, WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, WBA "world" middleweight title-holder Danny Jacobs and now Eubank wouldn't agree to fight him. …
