Equality Center to Host Gala July 22 to Raise Funds for Permanent Space

The Capital City Equality Center will host a "Raise the Roof" gala on July 22 to raise funds for a permanent space.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. at Serendipity, 820 N. Kansas Ave.

The gala will feature dinner, entertainment and an auction, said executive director Dan Brennan.

"We hope to raise $25,000 -- that will get us to where we can seriously consider locations," Brennan said.

The organization is working toward securing a temporary location and eventually wants "a place to call our own," Brennan said.

The gala is an opportunity to begin fundraising and spreading the word about what the center is and what it is trying to do, said Stephanie Mott, the center's board president.

The center is envisioned as a safe space for the LGBTQ community and as a resource for people to find jobs and groups to host meetings, Brennan said in February when the nonprofit's creation was announced. …
