Unregulated Trade Is Bad ; Letters, Comments and Emails

I'M pro-trade, but not at any price. I think it should serve the real economy and real people rather than be dictated by abstract mantras: 'Free trade good, regulation bad."

Manchester's proud championing of free trade in the past was to benefit our poor rather than help exploitative magnates. Nowadays the opposite is the case as big businesses, intent on maximising short-term profits to be remitted abroad, seek freedom from responsible controls introduced to protect people and environment and to bring sustainable trade.

Though many may think that the Brexit vote has taken away the threat of a 'corporate take-over' of our public services, NHS, and democracy by US-based corporations using the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), they would be mistaken.

The already-finalised EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) just awaits ratification and, if implemented, will allow transnationals to use a Canadian subsidiary company to act as a conduit for US corporations to prise open our regulations that protect people from exploitative excesses. …
