In "The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels" (July 3 Forum), Andrew Langer argues that fossil fuels are the only means of "lifting the developing world out of poverty." He states that fossil fuels remain indispensable to life. Therefore, the "green campaigners" would deny the poor the cheap energy they need to flourish.

These arguments are specious at best. There is definitely a moral case to be made for helping to lift the poor out of poverty, but it isn't a moral case for fossil fuels; it's a moral case for clean energy infrastructure development, technology transfer and other kinds of aid.

Mr. Langer cites China as an example of how fossil fuels have benefited the poor. China, however, is installing renewable and nuclear clean energy generating capacity at a breakneck pace and is rapidly improving energy efficiency. …
