Article excerpt

Three major banks that do business in Southwest Florida ranked in the top 10 in a new survey that measured the reputations of financial institutions among consumers.

Regions Bank finished first with an "excellent" rating in the seventh annual survey by advisory firm Reputation Institute and American Banker magazine.

Synovus Financial ranked second, and SunTrust Bank was 10th among the lenders with local presences.

The survey measured perceptions of major banks by both customers and non-customers. Ratings were collected from online questionnaires on seven factors: products and services, innovation, workplace, governance, citizenship, leadership and performance.

"The most reputable banks recognize that perceptions of governance -- inclusive of ethics, openness, honesty and transparency -- carry the most weight of importance among customers and non-customers," said Stephen Hahn-Griffiths, vice president and managing director at Reputation Institute. "However, they also realize that beyond the table stakes of delivering on products and services, that perceptions of workplace are increasingly important, accounting for 14.6 percent of their reputation among customers and 14.8 percent among non-customers."

Ranking for other banks with local ties included PNC, 13th; Chase, 14th; Northern Trust, 18th; Wells Fargo, 19th; BMO Harris, 20th; BB&T, 21st; Fifth Third, 30th; and Bank of America, last at 33rd.
