SUMMER LEARNING DAY

Free books, toys, food and other items will be handed out to children and their parents throughout the region Thursday as part of National Summer Learning Day.

The events are meant to counter what's known as the so-called "Summer Slide." Every summer, low-income children lose two to three months in reading while higher-income youth make slight gains. Most children also lose about two months of math skills in the summer. Because of summer learning loss, low-income children are less likely to graduate from high school or enter college.

Additionally, job opportunities decline by 40 percent in the summer, making it difficult for many young people to find their first job and stay safe over the summer.

Here are a list of some of the public events taking place Thursday:
