PASSAIC -- One of the biggest events of any summer in Passaic is Doin' It in the Park, an all-day festival that happens Saturday in the playground of School 11 at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Monroe Street.

Hundreds are expected to attend the midsummer gathering that is held each year to remember Bobby Thomas, a Passaic police officer who gave back to the community before his untimely death to cancer in 1979 at the age of 40.

"This is our fifth straight year and we're real excited about it," said John Willis, who organizes the event for Doin' It in the Park, a non-profit organization.

The School 11 playground is one of the biggest in the city and has always been at the center of action in town. Thomas realized how important the playground was to the kids who grew up around Myrtle and Monroe and spent much of his time developing youth programs: basketball tournaments, dance teams. …
