I'm the 66-year-old (white) mother of three adult children of color and grandmother of one. I grew up in a rural community within two miles of the Flight 93 crash site, learning respect for authority and the assurance police officers were our friends. I raised my own children the same way, and it's terrifying to think my naivete might cost them their lives.

As I've learned to see the world through my children's eyes and experiences, I can only say white privilege is most certainly a reality, and prejudice isn't limited to backwoods Klansmen. It's sometimes shared by people with the power to pull them over and see to it they don't make it safely home to their beds at night.

I still deeply respect the police. I recognize split-second decisions sometimes must be made, and occasional honest - and tragic - misjudgments happen (either by a citizen or a police officer). …
