Trade Group Quantifies Need for Skilled Workers

Since the end of the Great Recession, homebuilders in Southwest Florida and beyond have complained about the difficulty of finding construction workers, particularly those in the skilled trades.

Now, a national homebuilding trade group has tried to get some sense of how big a labor shortage there might be, using federal, state and survey data.

In Florida, the National Association of Home Builders -- accounting for estimates of the need for single-family and multifamily construction and residential remodeling -- projected that workforce demand has risen 40 percent from the Sunshine State's construction payrolls in 2014 through the end of this year.

The trade group cited federal Bureau of Labor Statistics data that showed 205,502 workers in Florida, including part-time laborers, during 2014, with demand then for about 163,741. …
