Defense Requests Continuance to Review 1,400 Pages of Documents in Detective Erin Thompson Perjury Case

Shawnee County sheriff's Detective Erin Thompson, who was charged with three counts of perjury May 24, appeared before District Judge Cheryl Rios for a criminal assignment docket Thursday.

Thompson's defense attorney Tom Lemon said he had received 1,400 pages of discovery documents and about 30 disks containing audio and video from the state, and that he was about halfway through reviewing that information.

Lemon also said the parties had met in the judge's chambers briefly to discuss several discovery motions that have been filed and that those had been resolved.

Rios said transcripts from the criminal case against Jonathan Maldonado-Vasquez, who is charged with first-degree murder, will be unsealed upon a prepared order from the defense. Thompson's name surfaced in the Maldonado-Vasquez case in April when his defense attorney requested documents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation on its investigation into Thompson.

Lemon requested a 60-day continuance to complete review of the evidence. …
