Neither of the policies regarding high school bathrooms for transgender students garnered enough support to pass Monday night.

One motion - which would have established a "sex-specific" protocol that required students to use a bathroom that matches their biological gender - failed on a 4-4 school board vote. Another motion - which would have allowed students to use a bathroom that matched their expressed gender identity - also failed 4-4.

Unless something changes in the meantime, when school resumes on Aug. 24, the district will continue with the practice that has been in place and that follows the U.S. Office of Civil Rights guidelines, said district spokeswoman Rachel Hathhorn.

She said there is no specific policy, per se, but transgender students have been using the bathroom of the gender with which they identify, the private bathroom in the nurse's office, or a single-room unisex bathroom. …
