Hillsong United Coming to KC ; Red-Hot Australian Group Performs with Up-and-Coming Lauren Daigle

Article excerpt

No, you won't hear members of Hillsong United sing "Waltzing Matilda," the unofficial national anthem of their native Australia, when the red-hot worship group from the Land Down Under performs live on its current tour.

As a matter of fact, Jonathon "JD" Douglass, one of the group's main worship leaders, isn't sure of what the band will perform during its "United Empires Tour 2016," which comes at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, to Sprint Center, 1407 Grand Blvd. in Kansas City, Mo.

Suffice it to say there will be something old and a lot of new during the concert, which also features Lauren Daigle, who has burst onto the Christian music scene in a huge way this year.

"We try to do a little bit of everything," said Douglass, 32, during a recent phone chat from his home base in Sydney, Australia. "But it's always a little hard -- we've got way more songs than we have time for."

Songs from the group's 2015 album "Empires" no doubt will be featured in the concert: "Heart Like Heaven," "Say the Word" and "Touch the Sky" among them.

But, as Douglass said, there are far more Hillsong United songs that could be played than time will allow.

The group was formed as an off-shoot of the Hillsong Church youth ministry in Sydney. The church is under the direction of Pastor Brian Houston and services are broadcast around the world on outlets such as the Trinity Broadcasting Network.

The group has 20 albums to its credit, with many songs going substantially longer than the standard fare in contemporary Christian worship music.

Douglass said with "Empires," the 10-man band's critically acclaimed release, the goal was "to go back to square one" and remain "fresh," avoiding a feel of familiarity.

The group has found itself in the international limelight, as it performs to sold-out arenas around the world. …
