A Sop to Startups Clinton Seeks 'Special Status' for Their Loans

Hillary Clinton's proposal to give startup founders a break on their student loans sounds, like many startups, exciting. But, as is also the case with many startups, it would be wise not to get too excited.

The proposaloffers entrepreneurs the chance to skip paying student loans for up to three years while they work on startups. Early employees would have access to the same "special status" for loans. Entrepreneurs would be offered $17,500 in loan forgiveness if their enterprise is deemed especially socially valuable.

Adding a special accommodation for entrepreneurs to the existing special accommodations for government and nonprofit employees is a recognition that businesspeople as well as those in the public and nonprofit sectors accept financial hardships in order to do something that is important to society. …
