Scouting report *The Cardinals did not lose many series last year in winning 100 games, but they lost four out of seven meetings with San Diego. The Padres are a different team, however, since they played the Cardinals in San Diego in April. Righthander James Shields has gone to the Chicago White Sox, righthanded reliever Fernando Rodney has been dealt to Miami and lefthander Drew Pomeranz went to Boston. And they just won their last three games, sweeping San Francisco.

Cardinals righthander Carlos Martinez, receiving nine days' rest after his last start, will pitch Tuesday, having allowed just six runs in his last six starts. ... On Thursday, the Cardinals will face righthander Luis Perdomo, who was an All-Star for their Peoria team in the Midwest League last year.
