The American Lung Association, in its "State of the Air 2016" publication (reported in the April 20 PG), assigned an "F" grade to our region's air quality for both fine particulate and ozone pollutants. The PG article said the area "remains a long way from being healthful." The ALA report falsely continues to portray Pittsburgh as an entire region of unhealthy air, which is simply no longer true.

The 2016 report continues a 17-year series of similar unscientific, distorted and headline-grabbing publications that are not supported by actual air quality monitoring. For its ranking methodology, the ALA cherry-picks the worst data from individual monitoring sites and then uses these to affix its "F" grade and "unhealthy air" label to the entire 12-county region from New Castle to Weirton, W. …
