As I read the archbishop of Philadelphia's admission requirements for aspiring Catholics who are same-sex couples, remarried Catholics lacking annulments or unwed couples living together ("Phila. Archbishop: Divorced Catholics Must Avoid Sex," July 7), I wondered why any of them would want to become members.

As the details revealed, to be Catholics in good standing, these couples must have relationships devoid of "sexual intimacy" and be devoted instead to chastity and celibacy.

First, in what realm of humanity and nature does a couple's life devoid of physical intimacy create one that is emotionally, psychologically and intellectually healthy? I forgot; it is completely rational in the pretzel-like logic of a Catholic marriage annulment.

Second, how well has this whole "vow of celibacy" thing worked with even those ordained by the church as shepherds of the flock? …
