AIR BASE IS NAMED

The government announces that the Southern Illinois air base will be named after Cpl. Frank Scott, who died in an aviation crash in 1912 near the base, becoming the first enlisted man to die in a plane crash.

GARDEN CELEBRATION

Free admission Sunday to the Missouri Botanical Garden will mark founder Henry Shaw's 216th birthday. Activities are planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Henry Shaw" will greet guests to the birthday bash, alongside other actors dressed in Victorian costumes. Have your silhouette portrait drawn by an artist and witness the skills of a wandering stilt walker and juggler. Bob Kramer's Marionettes will perform at 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. outdoors on Spoehrer Plaza.

Visitors also can get an exclusive peek inside the historic Museum Building. Opened in 1859, the Museum Building originally housed the Garden's mounted herbarium plant specimens and library. …
