2nd Guilty Plea in Conspiracy to Mail Cocaine to Bergen

A New York man on Wednesday became the second defendant to plead guilty in a scheme to ship more than 4 pounds of cocaine by mail from Puerto Rico to Bergen County.

Ramis Esteves, 33, in a hearing before U.S. District Judge Claire C. Cecchi in Newark, admitted he was guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

Last month, Sasha Melendez, 37, of Bergenfield pleaded guilty to an identical charge and implicated Esteves in the trafficking operation. She is awaiting sentencing in October.

Melendez and Esteves were both arrested on drug trafficking charges in March 2015 after an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Drug Enforcement Administra-tion.

Beginning in July 2014, investigators identi-fied her as a recipient of cocaine-laden parcels that had been mailed from Puerto Rico to various addresses in northern New Jersey, authorities said. …
