NEW YORK - Alex Rodriguez doesn't play much against right- handers, but with five career home runs against Orioles ace Chris Tillman he was in the lineup Thursday, although he went 0-for-3.

He batted seventh, two spots behind Mark Teixeira. It was only the second time this season that neither batted in the first four spots when both were in the lineup.

Manager Joe Girardi said he wanted to keep Didi Gregorius batting sixth.

Asked why A-Rod was hitting seventh, he answered: "It just sort of worked out that way."

Headley returns: Third baseman Chase Headley returned to the team after missing Wednesday night's game and arriving after Thursday's game started. He grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

Headley said his oldest son had what was supposed to be a routine procedure during the All-Star break, but he suffered complications this week. …
