MANATEE COUNTY -- A__ proposed apartment complex on__ what is now church property at__ the boulevard entrance to Peridia,__ a golf and country club subdivi-sion__ of single-family homes, is__ drawing conflicting opinions from__ residents.__ Peace River Presbytery owns 8.5__ acres west of Peridia Boulevard and__ north of State Road 70, where the__ Braden River Presbyterian Church__ is located.__ The denomination wants to sell__ a portion of the land to developer__ Kelly Frye, whose Meridian Gen-eral__ Contracting would build a__ 61- unit residential complex called__ The Terraces at Peridia. Sixteen__ of the apartments would qualify__ as affordable housing for tenants__ earning less than the area median__ income.__ "We believe this will be a very__ positive addition to the S.R. 70 cor-ridor,__ a good neighbor to our church__ and to the Peridia community as a__ whole," Pastor Glenn Buzbee wrote__ the County Commission.__ About 70 people, nearly 40 identifying themselves as__ church members and at least__ seven saying they are church__ members and Peridia resi- dents,__ have petitioned the__ County Commission urging__ it to approve the develop-ment__ during an Aug. 4 public__ hearing.__ The Planning Commis-sion__ last week recommended__ approval of the Presbytery's__ request that the property be__ rezoned to a category that__ allows both the church and__ the potential apartment__ complex.__ Yet many other resi-dents__ of Peridia are strongly__ urging the County Com-mission__ to deny the project.__ They attended the Planning__ Commission meeting__ wearing red shirts to show__ their solidarity and have__ written the County Com-mission__ numerous letters of__ objection.__ They stress that they are__ not against the affordable__ housing component but__ other aspects of the develop-ment,__ such as its height and__ limited access.__ Speaking on behalf of 212__ residents, Peridia home-owner__ Wayne Roell told the__ planning commissioners__ that if the public hearings__ were held when more of__ the community's seasonal__ residents could be pres-ent,__ he would probably be__ representing twice as many__ households.__ Roell said most Peridia__ residents do not regard The__ Terraces at Peridia as a good__ fit for that site. …
