As West Virginians continue to clean up from the recent devastating floods, the problems faced by those who lose their electrical power during such disasters is again at the forefront. For a South Charleston company, residential power generation is its specialty.

XSpec Power, at 515 C St., founded five years ago by Tim and Kay Cunningham, is now under new ownership. Former Walker Machinery employees Rodney Canterbury and Victor Lantz purchased XSpec Power in May. Tim Cunningham remains with the company as a consultant.

XSpec Power offers free consultations with homeowners interesting in having a generator installed. In consultation with homeowners, XSpec Power experts can advise them on the amount of generator power they would need during power outages.

"That's all included in the estimate of installation, Lantz said.

Canterbury said there is no typical, one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to home generators.

"The important thing about generators -- you need to assess each and every home, because every home is different, Canterbury said.

Important considerations include the kinds of heating and cooling a house has, the type of water heater it has and how much electricity a homeowner wants during an outage. …
